Attention:

This mass airflow meter is not suitable for the USA, Canada, Brasil and Mexico versions of the Porsche 986 Boxster and 986 Boxster S above.

This mass airflow meter is used only on vehicles that are equipped with an electronically actuated accelerator pedal (M620 option code.) For earlier Porsche 996 Carrera’s and 986 Boxters that are equipped with a cable-driven accelerator pedal, use mass airflow meter reference 911.020048C.

The air flow meter measures the mass of air that enters the engine. This measurement is required so that the fuel injection system can keep the ratio of air and fuel as close to optimum as possible (stoichiometric 14:1 ratio) throughout the engine’s RPM range and under different engine loads. The air flow meter is equipped with an airflow sensor, a moving flap connected to a potentiometer. The potentiometer generates a variable signal that depends upon how far the flap is opened. If this flap is damaged from an engine backfire or becomes stuck, then the fuel injection computer will not be able to detect the amount of air entering the engine. In this case engine performance and fuel economy will be severely affected.

This mass airflow meter is placed on the vehicle’s air filter housing.
