Our right-side stainless steel Sport heat exchanger from SSI is used in the following vehicles:

Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 L (1984-1989)

Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 L Turbo-Look (1984)

Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 L Speedster (1989)

SSI (Stainless Systems Inc.) has set the standard for Porsche stainless exhaust heat exchangers. SSI heat exchangers are manufactured out of 100% stainless steel so they will not rust.

On OEM heat exchangers made of mild steel, rust can eat through the metal of the exhaust pipes and leak carbon monoxide into the cockpit heater system.  Rust also eats away at the thin metal that surrounds the exhaust pipes which makes up the hot air ducting. This results in lost heat that would normally be funneled to the cockpit. It is not uncommon to have to replace OEM mild steel heat exchangers more than once over the life of the car because of rust. However, SSI heat exchangers which are rust-proof and durable will last the life of your Porsche.

SSI heat exchangers have several material and fabrication improvements that set them apart from all other heat exchangers.

SSI uses only Type 304 (18% Cr, 8%+ NI) for both the exhaust tubes and the hot air ducting. The 304 steel tubing used in SSI exchangers is highly resistant to sulfuric acid that is present in exhaust gas. It has a corrosion rate of approximately 1mil/year in 5% sulfuric acid at 190F. Lower-quality stainless steel (chrome only and magnetic) is eaten away by sulfuric condensate about 5 or 6 times faster than the rate of 304 stainless steel which SSI uses.

SSI uses Type 304 stainless steel with a wall thickness of 1.65 mm. (0.065") for exhaust tubes and Type 304 stainless steel with a wall thickness of  0.71 mm. (0.028") for hot air ducting. The thinner wall thickness of the hot air ducting ensures that there is a warning for any damage to the SSI heat exchanger: it would appear on the outer ducting first, before the main exhaust pipes are compromised.

SSI heat exchangers are all manually welded using a continuous weld bead rather than being point-welded like other heat exchangers. This ensures absolute attention to detail at the critical welds as well as a leak-proof joint where tubes are joined.

Note: The left and right heat exchangers are each sold separately.

During the installation of your SSI heat exchangers you will also need the following parts:

911.010479A: M8 nut, 912 + 911 (65-89)

911.010479: Allen exhaust barrel nut, 911 (65-98) + 911 Turbo (75-89) + 993 Turbo (95-98) + 914-6 (70-72)

911.010481A : Exhaust port gasket, 911 (84-89)

911.010485 :  Gasket, heat exchanger to catalytic converter /crossover pipe 911 (75-89) + 911 Turbo (75-89) + 964 Turbo (91-94) + 993 (94-98)
