A defective valve stem seal will allow oil to flow through the valve stems, which will cause your engine to smoke. It is recommended to inspect and replace if required your valve stem seals when you have an engine that produces oil fumes but when the piston rings are in good condition (as evidenced by an even and adequate compression in all cylinders). These valve stem seals are also routinely replaced when rebuilding your engine.
