This water thermostat is a temperature-controlled valve that isolates the cooling liquid in the radiator circuit from the cooling liquid in the engine block until the latter achieves its optimal working temperature. The opening and closing temperature threshold for this thermostat is set at 87°C (189°F). Below this water temperature, the thermostat is closed to allow the engine to warm up to its optimum working temperature and minimize cold engine wear. This is especially important after a cold engine start. Above 87°C the valve opens to allow coolant from the radiator circuit to mix with the coolant in the engine block to keep it at an ideal operating temperature under different engine loads.
It is important to replace the water thermostat in your 924 should your engine have trouble keeping its optimum working temperature. Should the thermostat fail in the closed position, the engine risks over-heating. Should the thermostat fail in the open position, the engine will take much longer to reach operating temperature and premature engine wear will result.
